Por tercer año consecutivo, este concurso de Tango, realizó su Final, en una noche cargada de emoción y adrenalina.
Auspiciado por el Consulado Argentino de Los Angeles, American Airlines, El Suplemento y Ser Travel; la competencia anual fue puesta en escena, el 4 de abril, por la American Tango Association, entidad sin fines de lucro, cuya misión es promover el Tango a través de eventos y proveer ayuda a las entidades dedicadas a los niños, aquí en USA y Latinoamérica.
Competidores de varias ciudades de California viajaron a la ciudad de Los Angeles, punto culminante donde fueron convocados los finalistas, provenientes de las preliminares, que se realizaron durante el mes de marzo en las ciudades de: San Francisco y San Diego.
También Los Angeles tuvo su preliminar, previa a la final, en una fiesta donde el espíritu tanguero revitalizó su mensaje de amistad. La misma se llevó a cabo en el Club Pasión el día 21 de marzo con una nutrida concurrencia.
De cada ciudad, (San Diego, San Francisco y Los Angeles) se eligieron tres finalistas, (nueve en total) que fueron los que compitieron en La Gran Final, también en el club Pasión.
Los jueces de este año, bailarines y profesores internacionales, fueron los encargados de evaluar a las parejas. Cabe destacar el hecho que la A.T.A, especialmente invitó al profesor de Tango Ernesto Pupy Castello, quien viajó directamente desde Buenos Aires, para oficiar como presidente del jurado en la noche de la final.
La Gran Final: la esperada noche tuvo lugar, el 4 de abril del 2002.
Con la presencia del Cónsul General de la República Argentina Luis Maria Kreckler, el Cónsul Adjunto Leandro Fernández Suárez; el señor Julio Lublinerman de Ser Travel y American Airlines, y Pablo Garriga representando a El Suplemento. Junto a ellos figuras del Tango locales e internacionales.
El público ávido y ansioso, por ver buen Tango, colmó el recinto destinado a la competencia, y no fueron defraudados. El alto nivel de los participantes enardeció varias veces a la concurrencia, que premiaba a cada pareja con aplausos y expresiones de aprobación. Este año los organizadores Jorge y Mónica Visconti, introdujeron una innovación: el voto del público, muy bien recibido por los amantes del Tango, que tuvieron la oportunidad de elegir a su pareja preferida, aquella con la cual más se identificaron.
Nueve finalistas, todos grandes bailarines apasionados por el Tango, nueve estilos y maneras de expresar lo mismo, esa particular manera de sentir. Portadores y representantes del profundo mensaje del Tango, todos ellos sumidos en el abrazo, nos emocionaron hasta las lágrimas y nos transportaron con su arte, a nuestra querida Buenos Aires.
Mónica Visconti tuvo a cargo la conducción del certamen, cuya dinámica y comentarios hicieron las delicias del público, que no tuvo respiro, en una noche donde los nervios fueron puestos a prueba, no solo para los participantes.

The prestigious night of the Grand Finals of the third annual USA Tango Contest was loaded with emotion and adrenalin. Sponsored by the Argentine Consulate of Los Angeles, American Airlines, El Suplemento and SER Travel, the competition held on April 4th at Passion supper club in Studio City is presented by the American Tango Association, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote the Tango, present Tango events, and provide aid to organizations dedicated to children's initiatives in the USA and Latin America.
Finalists from several cities in California traveled to Los Angeles for the Grand Finals. During the month of March, preliminaries were held in the cities of San Francisco and San Diego. The Los Angeles, preliminary was held on March 21st at Passion supper club, where the tanguero spirit revitalized the message of friendship in competition. This was the case at all the preliminaries, where 3 finalists were chosen (nine in total) to compete in the Grand Finals.
The international judges of this years event were professional dancers, teachers and ATA's special invited guest, Ernesto Puppy Castello, Master Milonguero and Chief judge of Mundial Argentina Tango Competition in Buenos Aires, who traveled from Buenos Aires specifically to direct the judges of the Grand Finals.

The Grand Finals took place, April 4th with the presence of the General Consul of the Republic of Argentina, Luis Maria Kreckler, Consul, Leandro Fernandez Suarez; Mr. Julio Lublinerman representing SER Travel and American Airlines, and Pablo Garriga publisher of El Suplemento, in addition to local and international Tango celebrities.
Those who attended, anxious, to experience good Tango, filled Passion to overflow for the competition, and these Tango lovers were not disappointed. The competitors exhibited a high level of skillfulness in their execution of the dance, to the appreciative applause of those in attendance.
This year the organizers Jorge and Monica Visconti introduced a new innovation. The Popular Vote, which was received well by the Tango audience, who enthusiastically chose their own category of winning couple.
Nine finalists, all great dancers, passionate about the Tango, nine styles and ways of expressing a particular feeling, they represent and carry the deep message of the Tango, submerging themselves in the embrace, moving us to tears and transporting us with their art to our dear Buenos Aires.
Monica Visconti narrated this event with dynamic commentaries to the delight of the people. The evening was breathtaking….the nerves of the participants were tested and the audience was also caught in the whirlwind of the emotional and festival atmosphere.
Each finalist showed their best and none was a small effort, the job of the judges was arduous but finally they made their decision. We have given a brief synopsis of their decision, with the names and positions of the contestants. In later editions we will give further information and include their commentaries.
