Al finalizar el 2002, no podemos más que hacer una mirada hacia atrás para rememorar los hechos y frases que marcaron e hicieron de este año que pasó, uno de los más prolíficos en eventos y visitas de maestros que contribuyeron con sus conocimientos, al crecimiento de la incipiente comunidad tanguera de California.
Muchos son los eventos que podríamos mencionar a sabiendas de que todos han sido muy buenos. Sólo queremos dejar constancia de aquellos que -por su popularidad y aceptación- se han convertido en un importante aporte tanto para el tango como para la cultura argentina.
En los meses de febrero, marzo y abril del 2002 se desarrolló el Tercer Concurso de Tango de la American Tango Association, evento que une a las tres principales ciudades de California: Los Angeles, San diego y San Francisco. Contó con gran convocatoria de público y fue auspiciado por el Consulado Argentino en Los Angeles, American Airlines y Ser Travel.
Hubo muchas aperturas y cierres de milongas como es de suponer en una comunidad en continuo cambio; sin embargo hay dos lugares que han sabido mantenerse a través del tiempo. Uno de ellos es la milonga de los viernes en Westwood, organizada por Yolanda Rossi y M. Espinoza; la otra es la de los sábados: El Encuentro (una de las más populares) regenteada por Angel & July y Alexis & Bárbara. Tenemos que destacar que esta milonga organizó varios eventos durante el año y uno de ellos fue “Toda la noche”, que fue muy bien recibido por el público (que se repita).
Otro acontecimiento que tenemos que destacar, es la vuelta del tango a la Asociación Argentina de Los Angeles. Esta entidad viene difundiendo nuestra cultura desde hace varios años y se ha convertido en una de las organizaciones argentinas más importantes en los Estados Unidos. Esta milonga tiene como anfitriones a Jorge y MónicaVisconti y se realiza los días jueves.
Hemos visto con pesar, el cierre de varios lugares que llegaron a ser populares. Uno de ellos fue la milonga de Naifas, de la cual tenemos gratos recuerdos, como así también del paso fugaz de algunos milongueros que abrieron lugares de tango, para luego volver a Argentina. No debemos olvidarnos, de la milonga de los domingos, The Tango Garden, que posee Raúl Perotto, que ha sabido mantenerse a través del tiempo. También hemos asistido a congresos de tango y uno de ellos, aunque se realizó y fue organizado por Marcos Questas en Las Vegas, tocó de cerca a los tangueros de Los Angeles, y ha tenido buena respuesta por parte del público.
Quizá una de las fiestas más pintorescas y populares de este año, fue la noche de Halloween en la Asociación Argentina. Podríamos continuar con la lista de eventos, pero sería muy larga y si hemos omitido a alguien desde ya les pedimos disculpas. Queremos despedirnos de este año, con algunas de las frases que nos han dejado los maestros del tango que visitaron Los Angeles y a los que se le realizaron sendas entrevistas aquí, en el Suplemento del Tango:

“El tango es ritmo y elegancia, si usted pierde su pose, si vuelve para atrás sin razon, si mueve los brazos y si después de cada figura pierde la postura, eso no es tango.
Julio/02 Nito y Elba
“Los Angeles es una ciudad muy especial, yo diría muy difícil, vemos una gran rivalidad entre maestros y profesores, que no hemos observado en otros sitios”.
Septiembre/02 Natalia y Francisco.
“Que la gente baile tango, principalmente tango, pero por favor que lo camine bien, fundamentalmente que lo camine bien”.
Septiembre/02 Nito y Elba
“Los mejores bailarines están en las milongas, he visto allí grandes bailarines que nunca llegaron a hacer un show”.
Diciembre/02 Chicho Frumboli
“Yo bailo lo que aprendí, pero más allá de eso, bailo lo que me divierte”.
La última frase que elegimos pertenece a una nota que le hicimos al “Rafa” en el mes de octubre, con la que muchos se han identificado (me incluyo):
“Mirá, lo voy a hacer sencillo. El tanguero comienza cuando me lustro los zapatos para ir a la milonga, mientras escucho un buen tango, eso me identifica. Cuando busco y selecciono una corbata para esa noche, la camisa, el traje, la búsqueda y la elección correcta, toda forma parte de esa ceremonia que es ser tanguero. Ya en la pista selecciono a aquella persona que comparte mi sentimiento. Si elegí un buen traje elijo un buen vestido, cuando llevo mis gemelos elijo unos buenos aros, estos detalles forman parte del tanguero. Cada pequeña cosa me hace sentir milonguero. Es la presencia y el sentido, allí comienza el tanguero; luego todo lo demás, la llegada a la milonga, los saludos… mis amigos”.
Bien queridos tangueros, esperamos seguir contando, con su presencia, y desde ya, agradecemos la atención recibida durante este año que pasó. Nosotros continuaremos aquí, tratando de interpretar sus inquietudes, y desde nuestro corazón tanguero les deseamos un Feliz 2003. Hasta la próxima.

Closing Thoughts 2002

At the end of 2002, all we can do is look back and remember the facts and phrases that marked this year, one of the most prolific years for Tango events and visits from the Masters who contributed their knowledge to the growth of the Tanguero community of California. There are too many very good events to mention them all so we will only mention some of those whose popularity and acceptance have made them an important contributor to the Tango and The Culture of Argentina in the US.
In the months of February, March and April/02 we have the Third contest of Tango by the American Tango Association. This event unites three main cities of California (Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco) with great assistance of the public and the auspices of the Argentina Consulate of Los Angeles, American Airlines and Ser Travel.
There have been many openings and closings of Milongas, this is normal for one community in continuous growth and change, however there are two places that have maintained through the changing times: one of them is the Friday Milonga in Westwood, organized by Yolanda Rossi and M. Espinoza. The other Milonga is Saturday's El Encuentro (one of the most popular) hosted by Angel & Julie and Alexis & Barbara, we have to emphasize that this Milonga organizes various events during the year, one was the Milonga "All the night" which was very well was received by the public (please do it again). Another Milonga, that I have to emphasize is the return of the Tango to the Argentina Association of Los Angeles, this organization has promoted our culture for many years and has become one of the most important organizations in The United States. This Milonga is hosted by Jorge and Monica Visconti on Thursday nights.
We have watched with sadness the closing of many places that were very popular, one of them Naifas' Milonga of which we have many pleasing memories. We also lament the Milongueros that opened places of Tango and then returned to Argentina, such as Armando Orzuza, who contributed a bright spot of light and color to our community.
We should not forget, Sunday's Milonga at The Tango Garden, hosted by Raul Perotto, that has also maintained through the times. Then there are the Tango Congresses: Marcos Questas promoted one in Las Vegas which was very well received by the public. An event of special note was the picturesque and popular TangoWeen (Halloween) night at the Argentina Association. We could continue with the list of events, but it is too long and if we have omitted someone please forgive us.
We want to say good-bye to this year, with some of the thoughts that were left by the Tango Teachers that visited Los Angeles and were featured in interviews here in the El Suplemento:

The ultimate phrase belongs to an interview that we did on "Rafa" in the month of October/02 which many identify with (including me): "Look I am going to make it simple. The Tanguero begins when I polish my shoes to go to the Milonga, while I listen to a good Tango, that identifies me. When I seek and select a tie for that night, the shirt, the suit, the search for the correct selection, every piece of this ceremony is to be a Tanguero. On the dance floor I select that person that shares my feeling, if I choose a good suit I choose a good dress, when I choose my cufflinks I select good earrings, these details belong to the Tanguero. Every little thing I do makes me to feel Milonguero. It is the presence and the sense, there begins the Tanguero; and all the other things, the arrival to the Milonga, the greetings … my friends."
